The Acou weathered the strongest storms for hundreds of years, revered for its calm strength of spirit by the people of Kagoshima.

From Shochu to Kokuto Rum

Located in Ibusuki, Kagoshima, Japan, our distillery partner Ooyama Jinhichi Shoten has dedicated themselves to making shochu since 1875.

While shochu is their main product, 6th generation distiller Yohei Ooyama also combines Japanese and modern distilling ingredients and techniques to create unique spirits.

For Nankai Acou Rum (White), he distills kokuto high-test molasses twice in small batches with a copper pot still rather than their shochu still.  Incredibly, it requires 5000L of kokuto mash (and a lot of careful attention) to make just 500L of rum.

100% Japanese Kokuto Rum

Nankai Acou Rum (White) does not use standard molasses. Instead, like Nankai Shochu, our Japanese rum uses artisanal kokuto sugar as its base.

Kokuto is a style of unrefined sugar made by boiling pure sugarcane juice for hours, concentrating flavor, umami and nutrients. Our ultra premium high-test molasses for Acou Rum is comprised entirely of locally grown and produced kokuto.

As a result, Nankai Acou Rum captures the deep flavor of the subtropical climate and environment of Ibusuki with notes of papaya and lemongrass.

Local Ingredients,
No Additives

In the small town of Ibusuki, Kagoshima, our distillery partner is dedicated to using only local ingredients to make the best craft spirits.

The heart of Nankai Acou Rum comes from kokuto high-test molasses, made from locally grown and communally harvested Kagoshima sugarcane.

Adding to the flavor, the pristine water from the underground springs of Ibusuki form the body of our rum.

Uniquely Japanese Rum

Nankai Acou Rum (White) is named after the Acou Tree of Miyagahama, the tallest ficus in Japan. The Acou has weathered the strongest storms and is revered as a goddess for its calm strength of spirit.

Japanese-style kokuto sugar, Ibusuki spring water, and 150 years of shochu distillation serve as the deep roots for this uniquely Japanese craft rum.

Enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail such as the Rum Sonic (1/3 rum, 1/3 soda, 1/3 tonic, lime).

What is Nankai Selection?

Nankai Shochu began from Paul and Mai’s honeymoon to Amami Island, Japan, where Mai grew up. Their love for Amami and the local kokuto shochu motivated them to start a company which would promote both.

But, as their adventures continued, they met other talented and passionate distillers outside of Amami Island. Nankai Selection is our newest line of handpicked products honoring these new friends. For instance, in Ibusuki, where Mai’s parents lived until recently, Ooyama Jinhichi Shoten handcrafts incredible shochu and spirits. A quick train ride and a visit with 6th generation distiller Yohei Ooyama resulted in Nankai’s newest products, Imo Black and Acou Rum.

Nankai‘s motto has always been to sell only what we like to drink. And that is still true.
