Our Product Story
Nankai began with Paul and Mai’s honeymoon in her hometown, Amami Island, Japan. They befriended the Machida Distillery and discovered a second love, kokuto shochu, a beautiful local craft spirit made from kokuto sugar. Wanting to drink it regularly and to share it with friends, Paul and Mai started importing their own brand of kokuto shochu in 2017. It is still what they enjoy at the end of their day.
A train stop away from where Mai’s parents lived in Ibusuki, Kagoshima is a small but legendary shochu distillery known for their award-winning imo (sweet potato) shochu. Mai visited one day and fell in love with not only their shochu but their experimental distilling of other global spirits using only local Kagoshima ingredients. Nankai decided in 2024 to begin importing their exquisite spirits.
