Our first post of 2023 is aptly a dark cocktail re Our first post of 2023 is aptly a dark cocktail recipe. Co-founder @mai_nankai was driving on New Year’s Eve when a car slammed into her.  Thankfully, she’s safe and recovering. And, we won’t let this scary moment define the rest of the year, because we’ve got things to do.

THE OUTLIER
2 oz Nankai White Oak
0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice
0.5 oz Simple Syrup
2 pc Blackberries
4 pc Blueberries
4 pcs Raspberries 
1 dash Orange Bitters
1 tsp Activated Charcoal

Muddle the berries in a cocktail shaker. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake with ice.  Strain and serve.

WARNING: Do not consume any medication or supplements within at least four hours of drinking a cocktail containing activated charcoal.  The charcoal will nullify their effectiveness.  Also, charcoal cocktails are not recommended shortly before or after a meal.

Hot Buttered Shochu is the perfect drink for this Hot Buttered Shochu is the perfect drink for this holiday season. Based on the traditional method of drinking “oyuwari,” or shochu mixed with hot water, this cocktail will bring you all the warm holiday vibes.

HOT BUTTERED SHOCHU aka “WARM & TINGLY”

2 oz Nankai Gold cask-finished shochu 
0.5 oz Kokuto Sugar Syrup
0.5 oz Melted Butter
1 dash Vanilla Extract
1 dash Powdered Cinnamon 
Spices (whole nutmeg, anise, cloves)

PREP:
Infuse Nankai Gold with nutmeg, anise and cloves over night. Make Kokuto Syrup by simmering 1 cup of kokuto sugar with 1 cup water.

RECIPE: 
Pour 1 cup of hot water (175° F) into a cup. Add shochu, syrup, butter, vanilla and cinnamon.  Stir thoroughly. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

TIP: if you know how to do a fat wash, then you can infuse butter directly into the shochu beforehand.
