Japanese Shochu Month in Los Angeles

From January 18 to February 17, 2024, 9 of the top bars in Los Angeles will be serving original cocktails made from Japan’s national spirit, Shochu. The theme of this month-long celebration is “Spark Your Senses,” which is perfect for describing the aromatic and flavorful spirit. Fortunately for us, four incredible bars selected Nankai Shochu for their cocktails and you can find them below. However, it is for a limited time, so if you’re interested, don’t wait around.

Accomplice Bar

Ramsey Musk from the Accomplice Bar in Mar Vista, CA created the Kiku Highball. This lovely highball features Nankai Gold, chrysanthemum oolong tea, calvados, sherry and clarified apple. It’s described as,
“Sweet chrysanthemum and earthy oolong dance with the barrel aged Shochu, bringing forward lighter fruit notes in this gentle and elegant Highball.

Employees Only

Adriana Ramos from Employees Only in West Hollywood, CA created the Tsukemono-tini. An absolute delight, this umami forward cocktail features Nankai Shochu, gin, olive brine and onion brine. It’s described as having “light rice aromas with a hint of vinegar. Bright pickled flavor and a semi-sweet finish.”

The Lincoln

Chloe Cave from The Lincoln in Venice, CA created the Tokyo Hi-Fi. A perfect remix of a whisky cockyail, it’s made with Nankai Gold, lemon, egg white, passionfruit falernum, and nutmeg. “The grassy aroma of the Shochu interplays with the tropical flavors of passionfruit and clove spice to form this light and fruity cocktail.”

Redbird

Tobin Shea of Redbird in Little Tokyo, CA created the K-Pop,. It features Nankai Shochu, vodka, blood orange amaro, Cointreau, lemon, tamarind, and gochugaru. Of course, it perfectly balances the crisp freshness of Nankai with a complex array of spice, tart, umami and fruit.
