When we first started Nankai Shochu, we certainly When we first started Nankai Shochu, we certainly received a lot of raised eyebrows about focusing on cocktails. But we persisted with our journey into the world of mixology and it truly gave us an appreciation for the versatile beauty of shochu.

Today we take an obscure and often overlooked cocktail called the Ink Street, which typically uses Rye Whiskey, lemon and orange juice, and we added our own Amami Island twist.

DAIDAI-KURO
2 oz Nankai Gold or White Oak
1 oz Fresh Orange Juice
0.75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
0.25 oz Simple Syrup

Shake over ice, strain and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lace made of caramelized sugar and geranium petals.

Starting today is Nankai’s favorite two-day occa Starting today is Nankai’s favorite two-day occasion of the year— it’s Kokuto Sugar Day! 5/9 and 10 can be read as “Go-ku-to,” which sounds like “Kokuto, a dad joke we can get behind.

Nankai is distilled from kokuto sugar, a highly prized artisanal sugar that retains the full flavor, minerals and vitamins that refined sugar usually loses. It’s considered a superfood in Japan and is often used in cooking. But it’s, of course, most famous for being the main ingredient in Amami’s exclusive style of shochu.

Ume season is back, which can only mean… time to Ume season is back, which can only mean… time to make our annual umeshu, or plum wine! Nankai Shochu and Nankai Gold are fantastic options for infusing ume plums and creating decadent umeshu at home.

The Vegan Vampire was born at an event when @gravlax.la gave us some blood oranges and someone from the Santa Monica farmers market gave us cilantro flowers.

VEGAN VAMPIRE 
1.5 oz Nankai Shochu
2 oz Blood Orange Juice 
0.5 oz Simple Syrup
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
1-2 fronds Cilantro Flower (if seeds are  starting to sprout, it’s even better)

Combine everything in a shaker with ice.  Shake vigorously.  Strain into a cocktail glass and serve. Feel good about not using real blood.

Introducing Nankai White Oak! We are the ecstatic Introducing Nankai White Oak! We are the ecstatic parents of this lovely cask-finished kokuto shochu from Amami Island, Japan. She’s already making us proud with a Double Gold medal at the @sfwspiritscomp.

Nankai White Oak is 24% ABV with beautiful notes of vanilla, honey, and green apple. It’s perfect for sipping and even food pairing (fried chicken sandwich). 

This is one of our favorite expressions, and we loved it so much we placed our family crest on the label. Shout out to our fellow Daki Myoga clans!

We’ll be slowly releasing this through May and June, so keep an eye out.  If you want it sooner, make sure to request your local retailer or bar.
