The Nankai Banana Gold Fashioned is a decadent twist on the classic whiskey Old Fashioned cocktail. Bartenders everywhere are creating variations on the time-honored cocktail recipe with mezcal, cognac, and other non-traditional spirits. So, of course, we created the Gold Fashioned using Nankai Gold, our award-winning barrel-aged blended kokuto shochu. It has been so popular that we’re following up with a banana-based version which may best the original.

Nankai Gold, Tempus Fugit’s Cremé de Banane in lieu of sugar, and Angostura Bitters comprise the Banana Gold Fashioned. An expressed orange peel garnish and an optional dark chocolate rim rounds out the cocktail. If you want to get fancy, a caramelized banana slice instead of the orange peel would be heavenly. Perhaps due to their mutual connection to tropical roots, kokuto shochu and bananas go incredibly well together.

Why a Shochu Old-Fashioned?

We’ve already talked about the Old Fashioned’s history and its well-deserved place as a top cocktail. But, it’s important to note why barrel-aged kokuto shochus like Nankai Gold are a valid (and delicious) replacement spirit. One, shochu in general expresses complex notes and umami because of its production methods. Single-distilled and koji-fermented guarantees a unique flavor journey that will intrigue, if not delight, most spirit enthusiasts.

Secondly, while kokuto shochus are distilled from artisanal kokuto sugar and rice rather than barley, they absorb flavors from oak casks well and age beautifully. In fact, aged kokuto shochus won the top spot at the Tokyo Whisky and Spirits Competition’s shochu category for two years in a row. Nankai Gold’s cask-finished notes of chocolate, raisins, spice, and fruit play well with the components for Old Fashioneds.
