Celebrate World Whisky Day with a Nankai Gold Old Fashioned

Nankai Gold cocktail

Today is #WorldWhiskyDay so what better way for us to join in on the celebration than sharing our recipe for an Old Fashioned. It’s one of the most famous and popular of whisky/whiskey cocktails, but it was actually first made with gin. So, we don’t feel so bad offering our Nankai Gold shochu version of the beloved drink. In fact, many bartenders these days love making their version of an OF using mezcal or other trending spirit.

Here’s our recipe for a single Old Fashioned:

  • 2 oz Nankai Gold Premium Blended Shochu
  • 1 Sugar Cube (3/4 tsp sugar)
  • 2-3 dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • Splash of Soda Water
  • Orange Peel

Instructions: Add sugar cube, bitters, and soda water to a glass. Muddle to dissolve the sugar. Add Nankai Gold shochu. Add large cube. Stir to partially melt ice. Express orange peel over glass and rim.

To make an entire batch of Old Fashioneds from a single bottle of Nankai Gold:

  • 1 bottle (750ml) of Nankai Gold Premium Blended Shochu
  • 13 Sugar Cubes
  • 36 dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • Splash of Soda Water

Instructions: In a large mixing glass, muddle sugar with bitters and soda water. Add the entire bottle of Nankai Gold. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Using a funnel, pour the cocktail batch back into the bottle until the bottle is full. There will be enough left in the mixing glass to make one Old Fashioned for yourself — you deserve it.
