The Peach Shochu Smash is our riff on the classic whiskey smash cocktail. It’s perfect for the summer with in-season fruits. While boozy, it is absolutely smooth and easy to drink. Our version features Nankai Gold, Amaretto, and fresh peaches and lemons.
The whiskey smash, created by Jerry Thomas in 1862 and featured in his legendary 1887 book, “Bar-Tender’s Guide,” inspired our version of the popular summer cocktail. The whiskey smash itself was a variation on the citrus smash, which featuring whiskey (of course), muddled lemons, simple syrup and optionally muddled mint leaves.
We wanted to honor this classic recipe but tailor it to our own Nankai Gold. For those of you new to shochu, Nankai Gold is a premium blend of barrel-aged expressions of our vacuum-distilled shochu. It has garnered numerous awards, including Gold Medals at both LA and SF spirit competitions. While it is distinctly a shochu, thanks to its single-distillation method and the koji fermentation, the oak casks we use conjure some familiar whiskey notes.
Like its inspiration, the Peach Shochu Smash is easy to sip and has no alcohol bite. It is absolutely refreshing for summer days and nights. The nuttiness of the Amaretto and the sweet peach perfectly complements the honey and chocolate notes in Nankai Gold. It’s recommended to enjoy this cocktail alongside a spicy and savory dish, like hot wings or BBQ ribs.
